Local rescue services say a cable car has crashed north of Piedmont in Italy. The cause of the accident is not yet known.
– Walter Milan of the Italian Rescue Team says this is a very serious accident.
The accident happened in the famous tourist cable car Stresa-Motoron.
At least nine people are said to have died in the crash, Reuters writes, citing sources from the rescue team.
“There were 11 passengers in the cable car at the time of the disaster,” said Simon Popio, a spokesman for the rescue team.
The victims include two children, who were reportedly seriously injured, the La Repubblica newspaper wrote. They will be taken by air ambulance to Regina Margarita Hospital in Turin.
The cause of the accident is unknown, but the vehicle must have fallen from a height above the ground. According to Reuters, Popio said the cable car fell while going up the mountain.
The cable car was upgraded in 2016 and reopened on April 24 after closing with the Corona since February last year.
He writes that this cable car takes tourists and locals from the city of Stressa to the top of the Motoron Mountains in 20 minutes at an altitude of 1400 meters. Reuters.
